What is a Computer System?

What is a Computer System?

A computer is a complex system made up of both hardware and software components. Hardware refers to the physical electronic devices that make up the computer which include processors, keyboard, monitor, speakers, etc. Software is the programs or sets of instructions which tell the computer what to do in response to a request or event. Without software a computer system is not useable.

All computer systems should have at least four types of hardware:

An input device is a hardware component that allows data to be transferred to the computer processor. E.g.: - keyboard, mouse, scanner, microphone, etc.

A computer processor (CPU) is a hardware device used to process any instruction given by the user.

An output device is any hardware component that allows the computer processor to show information or results after processing. E.g.: - monitor, printer, speakers, etc.

Storage is the hardware components used to store and save data outside the processor for future use.
